Door trouble guide
Replacing a hail-totaled garage door with the next storm in mind
Hail finished the old door and the claim will pay for a new one. The new door gets its own hail test, likely next spring, and most of what decides how it does gets settled at the measure.
When hail totals a garage door, what should the replacement be?
A door chosen for the next storm, not a copy of the one that dented. A claim pays to replace like with like, so the easy path is the same thin door again. Garage door replacement after hail is the one time the old door’s spec is open anyway, and the measure is where the next door gets decided.
Some doors that look totaled are not. Dents on one or two sections of a profile still in production can be a section job, and garage door panel replacement after hail covers how that call gets made.
Walk a block the week after a hailstorm and compare two doors facing the same way. They took the same stones. One reads as dimpled from the curb, the other only when you stand a few feet from it, and the difference is usually in how each door was built.
What part of a steel garage door decides how it takes hail?
Three things decide it on a steel door, and only two of them change whether a stone leaves a dent. The thickness of the steel skin and what sits behind it set how hard a hit the face can take. The surface sets whether the dents that do happen show from the street.
- Skin thickness is quoted as a gauge, where the lower number is the heavier steel: a 24-gauge skin is thicker than a 25 or a 26. Two doors that look identical in a photo can differ here, so ask which gauge the quote is for.
- What backs the skin. Foam bonded to the inside of the skin stiffens the face, and a stone has to push the steel and the foam behind it. A single-layer pan door is the skin with nothing behind it, hollow from stile to stile, and it gives at the first good stone. On an insulated garage door, ask whether the foam is bonded to the skin or set in loose behind it.
- Surface is about what you see afterward. An embossed woodgrain texture breaks up the light, and shallow dimples get lost in it. A smooth flush skin shows every one of them once the sun comes in low across the door.
None of this makes a door hailproof. Big enough hail dents heavy steel too. What changes is how many stones it takes to mark the door, and whether the marks read from the curb.
Should a garage door in hail country have windows?
Glass is the one part of a garage door that hail can break outright instead of denting. A dented skin is ugly. A broken top-section window lets rain into the garage and leaves a hole at head height until it is replaced. On a door that faces the storms, a solid top section removes that risk.
If the windows matter to you, keep them and ask at the measure what the glazing is and what replacing a single light involves on that door.
Does the replacement need a wind rating too?
Yes, here. The storms that drop hail on Creek County usually bring straight-line wind with them, and a door can come through the hail without a mark and still get pushed out of its track in the same squall line. Wind rating is part of every garage door installation conversation in this county, and the installation page answers what a modern rating changes compared with a door from the 90s.
What does a new door cost after hail, and what if you want more door than the claim pays for?
A builder-grade steel double runs $1,100 to $1,600 installed around Sapulpa, and an insulated steel double runs $1,600 to $2,600. The claim is figured on a door like the one that dented, so if the old door was a plain pan door, a plain pan door is what the claim prices. The gap between like kind and the door you want is yours to pay.
Both ranges sit with the rest of what a new door costs installed here, and the written quote narrows the one you pick to a single number. The order the claim runs in, photos first and the adjuster before anything gets replaced, is laid out in the storm claim section of the panel guide.
Insulated doors are ordered to size and take longer to arrive than stock steel. A hail-dented door that still runs can stay in service while the new one is on order.
