Door trouble guide

When the storm shelter is under the car, the garage door is part of the plan

Plenty of Oklahoma garages have a shelter set into the slab, and the car often parks right on the lid. That puts the garage door in the storm twice, once on the way down and once on the way back up.

Why does a shelter in the garage floor make the garage door part of the storm plan?

The car parked over the hatch has to come out before anyone can get the lid open, and the only way out for the car is through the garage door. In storm season a door that will not open becomes emergency garage door repair for that reason alone, whatever the fault turns out to be. The same door stands over the household when everyone climbs back out.

Most of the year the lid is a flat rectangle of steel the tires roll across twice a day, and nobody thinks about the door and the shelter together. Around Creek County the afternoon that needs both usually comes in the spring, the same season the supercells drive doors off their tracks.

What if the power is already out and the car is parked over the shelter?

With the power out, the opener is out of the picture and the door has to go up by hand. The release cord on the opener rail exists for this moment. Creek County loses power a few times every storm season, so a household with a shelter under the car meets that cord sooner or later, and a healthy door comes up easily once it is free of the opener.

A released door that will not budge, or feels like a wall of steel the moment you take the handle, has a broken garage door spring behind it, and that door is not getting fixed in the next ten minutes. Once a warning is out, nobody should still be in the garage working on it.

Which garage door problems can leave a car stuck over the hatch, and which show up ahead of time?

Most of them show up weeks early, on ordinary mornings, as a door that is slower or heavier than it used to be. Those are worth a call in March, long before an afternoon when the sky turns that green-gray color. Only a spring letting go and the power dropping arrive with no warning at all.

  • A door that feels heavy by hand or climbs slower than it used to is losing spring tension, and garage door spring repair is easier to book on a calm week.
  • An opener that stalls halfway or reverses now and then, with nothing in the way, is the one to bring to garage door opener repair before spring.
  • If the release handle is missing, tied up out of reach, or has never once been pulled, nobody in the house knows yet whether it works.
  • Some doors only run when someone helps them along with a hand at the bottom section, and that help may not be there on a storm afternoon.

What should you look at on the garage door when you come up out of the shelter?

You come up inside the garage, at floor level, a few feet from a door the wind may have been pushing on. Look before you stand. Daylight at a jamb, a roller sitting outside its track, a section bowed in toward you, or a lift cable hanging slack all mean the door has moved, and any one of them means staying out from under it.

The hatch gives a view of the door nobody gets standing up. Your eyes come up level with the bottom section and the floor seal, and a seal lifted off the slab at one corner, or a strip of light under the door that was not there yesterday, is often the first sign the door shifted in its opening.

Leave through the house door. When the power comes back, the opener does not get a test run until someone has looked at the door, because an opener pulling on a racked door can bend a section that was only out of line. A door in that state is what the held slots for same day garage door repair are for.

What does storm repair on a garage door cost here?

Off-track recovery is $150 - $350, and track damage decides where a door lands in that range. A single section is $280 - $600 when the door’s profile is still made. Those are the ordinary prices, since an emergency slot is a scheduling promise and not a surcharge. Springs, cables and openers sit on the same table of what storm repairs cost here.

Hail dents and wind damage on the sections themselves get sorted panel by panel in the guide to replacing a hail- or wind-damaged panel.
